This whole world is born from you, rests in you, will dissolve into you and returns to you. You are earth, water, fire, air and space. You are the four levels of speech.

You are beyond the three qualities, the three states of waking, dream and sleep, the three bodies and the three times. You dwell always in the root centre, the Muladhara. You are the threefold power of will, knowledge and action. Yogis meditate on you always. You are Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, Agni, Vayu, the Sun and the Moon; you are Brahman, earth, sky and heaven, and Om.

Ganadim purvamuchcharya varnadim tadanantaram, anusvarah paratarah, ardhendulasitam, tarena riddham, etattava manusvarupam, gakarah purvarupam, akaro madhyamarupam, anusvarashchantyarupam, binduruttararupam, nadah sandhanam, samhita sandhih, saisha ganeshavidya, ganaka rishih, nichridgayatri chhandah, ganapatirdevata, om gam ganapataye namah.

First say “g”, the first letter of “gana”, then “a”, the first of the alphabet, then the nasal “m”, crowned with the crescent and strengthened by Om: this is your mantra. G is its first part, a the middle, the nasal the last, the dot the highest; the sound joins them and their union makes the whole. This is the knowledge of Ganesha; its seer is Ganaka, its metre nichrid gayatri, its deity Ganapati. Om gam, salutations to Ganapati.

Ekadantaya vidmahe vakratundaya dhimahi, tanno dantih prachodayat.

We know the one-tusked Lord and meditate on him of the curved trunk; may that tusked god inspire our minds.

Ekadantam chaturhastam pashamankushadharinam, radam cha varadam hastairbibhranam mushakadhvajam, raktam lambodaram shurpakarnakam raktavasasam, raktagandhanuliptangam raktapushpaih supujitam, bhaktanukampinam devam jagatkaranamachyutam, avirbhutam cha srishtyadau prakriteh purushatparam, evam dhyayati yo nityam sa yogi yoginam varah.

One-tusked and four-armed, holding a noose, a goad and his tusk and granting blessings, with the mouse on his banner; red, big-bellied, with ears like winnowing fans, dressed in red, anointed with red sandal and worshipped with red flowers; the god who is kind to devotees, cause of the world, imperishable, who appeared at the dawn of creation, beyond nature and spirit. Whoever meditates on him like this every day is the best of yogis.

Namo vratapataye, namo ganapataye, namah pramathapataye, namastestu lambodarayaikadantaya vighnanashine shivasutaya shrivaradamurtaye namo namah.

Salutations to the lord of the hosts, to Ganapati, to the lord of Shiva’s attendants. Salutations to you, big-bellied, one-tusked, destroyer of obstacles, son of Shiva, embodiment of blessing, again and again.

Etadatharvashirsham yodhite, sa brahmabhuyaya kalpate, sa sarvatah sukhamedhate, sa sarvavighnairna badhyate, sa panchamahapapatpramuchyate, sayamadhiyano divasakritam papam nashayati, prataradhiyano ratrikritam papam nashayati, sayampratah prayunjano apapo bhavati, sarvatradhiyanopavighno bhavati, dharmarthakamamoksham cha vindati, idamatharvashirshamashishyaya na deyam, yo yadi mohaddasyati sa papiyan bhavati, sahasravartanadyam yam kamamadhite tam tamanena sadhayet.

Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit to attain Brahman, thrives in happiness everywhere, is not held back by any obstacle and is freed from the five great sins. Recited at evening it removes the day’s sins, at morning the night’s; recited at both, one becomes sinless, and recited everywhere, free of obstacles. One gains dharma, wealth, fulfilment and liberation. It must not be given to one who is not a disciple; whoever does so out of delusion incurs sin. Whatever wish one recites it a thousand times for, one attains through it.

Anena ganapatimabhishinchati sa vagmi bhavati, chaturthyamanashnan japati sa vidyavan bhavati, ityatharvanavakyam, brahmadyavaranam vidyanna bibheti kadachaneti.

Whoever bathes Ganapati while reciting this becomes eloquent. Whoever chants it fasting on the fourth lunar day becomes learned. So says the Atharvan sage. One who knows this, which encompasses even Brahma and the gods, is never afraid.

Yo durvankurairyajati sa vaishravanopamo bhavati, yo lajairyajati sa yashovan bhavati, sa medhavan bhavati, yo modakasahasrena yajati sa vanchhitaphalamavapnoti, yah sajyasamidbhiryajati sa sarvam labhate sa sarvam labhate.

Whoever worships with shoots of durva grass becomes rich like Kubera. Whoever worships with puffed rice becomes famous and wise. Whoever worships with a thousand modakas gains the fruit desired. Whoever worships with sticks dipped in ghee gains everything, everything.

Ashtau brahmanan samyaggrahayitva suryavarchasvi bhavati, suryagrahe mahanadyam pratimasannidhau va japtva siddhamantro bhavati, mahavighnatpramuchyate, mahadoshatpramuchyate, mahapapatpramuchyate, sa sarvavidbhavati sa sarvavidbhavati, ya evam veda, ityupanishat.

By teaching this properly to eight learned people, one shines like the sun. Chanted during a solar eclipse, by a great river or before the deity’s image, the mantra is perfected, and one is freed from great obstacles, great faults and great sins. One who knows this becomes all-knowing, all-knowing. Thus says the Upanishad.
