Stotra · Malayalam · Krishna · by Cherusseri Namboothiri

    Indirathannude punchiriyayoru, chandrika meyyil parakkayale

    As the moonlight of Lakshmi's smile spreads over his body,

    Palazhivellatthil mungininneedunna, neelabhamayoru shailampole

    he looks like a dark blue mountain standing immersed in the ocean of milk;

    तो वे क्षीरसागर के जल में डूबे खड़े एक नीले पर्वत जैसे लगते हैं;

    Mevininneedunna daivatham thanne, njan kaivanangeedunnen katthukolvan

    to that very God I bow with folded hands, that he may protect me.

    Keertthiye vazhtthuvanortthu ninneedumen, artthiye theertthu thunaykkename.

    I long to sing his glory; may he ease my anxious longing and help me.

    Deshikanathanthan padangaleshum, appeshalamayoru renulesham

    The fine speck of dust that touches the feet of my master, the Guru,

    Kleshangaleshunna pashangaleshayvan, ashayamthannullilakkunnen njan

    I place within my heart, so that the bonds that bring suffering may not touch me.

    Varanaveeranthannananam kaikkondu, pooriccha vanmadavari meyyil

    The god who wears the face of a mighty elephant, his body streaming with the rut of a great tusker,

    Ninnu vilangunna daivathamthan, kanivennum vilangukayennil menmel,

    the radiant god Ganesha: may his kindness shine on me more and more, always.

    Bharatheedevithan bhooriyayulloru, karunyapooravum veridathe

    And may the abundant flood of Goddess Saraswati's mercy, never leaving me,

    Nanmadhuvolunna nanmozhi nalkuvan, thanmakalanju vilangukennil

    shine in me and clear away my dullness, to give me fine words that drip with honey.

    Bharathamayoru peeyoosharashikku, karanamayoru varidhiyay

    The ocean that gave rise to that heap of nectar, the Mahabharata,

    Vyasanayulloru mamunithan kripa, dasanamennil pulambename.

    is the great sage Vyasa: may his grace overflow onto me, his servant.

    Moodhatha kondu njanethanumundinnu, kadayicholluvan bhavikkunnu,

    Out of foolishness, I set out today to say something, however rough and rambling;

    मूर्खतावश आज मैं कुछ कहने चला हूँ, भले ही वह बेढंगा और अनगढ़ हो;

    Bhoorikalayulla soorikalellarum, cheerathe ninnu porukkename

    may all the many learned scholars bear with me, without anger.

    Samsaramokshatthin karanamayatho, vairagyamennallo chollikkelppoo

    We hear it said that the way to freedom from worldly life is detachment,

    Ennathuthanne varutthininneeduvan, innithuthanne njan nirmmikkunnu.

    and it is to bring about just that, that I compose this today.

    Bodhamillathe njanethume vallathe, gathayay chollunnu bhashayayi

    Without much learning, I tell it clumsily, as a song in the common tongue;

    बिना अधिक ज्ञान के, मैं इसे भद्दे ढंग से, लोकभाषा में गाथा के रूप में कहता हूँ;

    Nirggunanayulloreeshanekkondallo, nirggunamayathu cherumappol

    and since it is about the Lord who is beyond all qualities, a work without merit suits him well.

    Kadayicholkilum kaidabhavairithan, needarnnuninnulla leelayallo

    Even if told roughly, it is still the timeless play of the slayer of Kaitabha;

    भले ही अनगढ़ ढंग से कहूँ, यह कैटभ के शत्रु भगवान की सनातन लीला ही है;

    Ennathukondenikkullilillethume, mandathayinnithu nirmmikkumbol

    so I feel no hesitation at all in composing it today.

    Madhavanamamaraprabhuvennatho, mapapam pokkunnonennu kelppoo

    We hear that Madhava, lord of the gods, takes away even the greatest sins;

    सुना है कि देवताओं के स्वामी माधव बड़े से बड़े पाप भी हर लेते हैं;

    Ennathukondu njan vandyarayullore, vandicchukondithu nirmmikkunnu.

    so, bowing to all who are worthy of reverence, I compose this.

    Palazhimathuthan palicchuporunna, koladhinathanudayavarmman

    Udaya Varman, lord of Kolathunadu, watched over by Lakshmi, daughter of the milk ocean,

    Ajnayeccheykayalajnanayulla njan, prajnanenningane bhavicchippol,

    has commanded it; so I, an ignorant man, now pose as a wise one

    Devakeesoonuvaymevininneedunna, kevalanthannude leelacholvan

    to tell the play of the Absolute, who came as Devaki's son.

    Avathallenkilumashathan chelkayal, arambhiccheedunnenayavannam.

    Though it is beyond me, my longing drives me on, and I begin as best I can.

    Sreepadmanabhanthan jayayenningane, perpettuninnoru medinithan,

    The Earth, renowned as the wife of Sri Padmanabha,

    Dushtarayulloru mannavarellarum, otterepponnu pirakkayale,

    because so many wicked kings had come to be born,

    Anthamillathoru bharam konderunna, santhapampoondu thalarnnu menmel

    grew ever more weary and distressed under an endless burden;

    अंतहीन बोझ से बढ़ते दुख में और भी थक गई;

    Dhenuvay chennu virinchanodellam, than vedanayothinal katharayay,

    she went to Brahma in the form of a cow and, trembling, told him all her pain:

    Kashtarayulloru dushtare srishticchathu, otterippokunnu thamburane!

    My lord, you have created far too many vile and wicked people!

    Bharatthekkondu njan pathalalokatthu, parathe veezhunnathundu nere

    With this weight I will soon sink straight down into the underworld;

    इस बोझ से मैं जल्दी ही सीधे पाताल लोक में धँस जाऊँगी;

    Indaletthookunna vanbharamingane, undayeelennume pandenikko.

    never before have I borne such a heavy, grievous burden.

    Kumbittuninnoru koormmavum chenchemme, thanpettupokunnathundu partthal

    Look, even the tortoise who stoops to hold me up is being crushed flat;

    देखिए, मुझे थामने के लिए झुका कच्छप भी दबकर पिस रहा है;

    Ookkanay ninnoru pannaganathanu, shoolkkaramerunnoothinninnellam.

    the mighty serpent king who bears me hisses harder and harder today;

    मुझे धारण करने वाले शक्तिशाली नागराज की फुफकार आज बढ़ती जा रही है;

    Anakalellame deenangalayitthannananam, thazhtthitthalarnnukoodi

    and the elephants of the quarters, all worn out, hang their heads in exhaustion.

    Mamayanayone! Bharatthekkondu njan, namavasheshayaypokummumbe

    O Lord of great Maya, before this burden leaves nothing of me but a name,

    Parathekandenneppalicchukollanam, karunyakkathale! Kaithozhunnen.

    look on me quickly and protect me, O heart of compassion; I bow to you with folded hands.

    Vedanapoondoru mediniyalithu, vedithanaya virinchanappol,

    Brahma, told all this by the suffering Earth,

    Vanavar choozhuttu medinithanumay, varthinkalmaulithannalayatthil

    surrounded by the gods and with the Earth beside him, went to the abode of Shiva, who wears the crescent moon,

    Parathe chennavar chollinarellarum, palazhithannilum chennu pinne

    where they quickly told him everything; then they all went on to the ocean of milk,

    Varuttuninnoru vakkukondanneram, varijanethrane vazhtthicchonnar,

    and there, with beautiful words, they praised the lotus-eyed Lord:

    Eerezhuparinum karanamayoru, karunyapooramam varirashe!

    O ocean overflowing with mercy, cause of all the fourteen worlds!

    Paridam pooriccha bharatthettheertthinnu, palicchukollenam parathe nee

    Remove the burden that weighs down the earth, and protect us now without delay.

    Ninkanivillaykilengalinnengane, sankadampokkunnu thamburane!

    Without your kindness, Lord, how can we ever end our sorrow?

    Vankanivandengal sankadam theerkkanam, pankajalochana! Shankiyathe.

    O lotus-eyed one, in your great kindness, end our sorrow without hesitation.

    Vasavanmumbaya vanavaringane, vazhtthinaneratthu varijakshan

    When Indra and the other gods had praised him thus, the lotus-eyed Lord

    Prathyakshanayittu chollininneedinan, bhakthiyekkanumbozhennu njayam,

    appeared before them and spoke, as he always does when he sees devotion:

    Munnamethanneyarinju njan porunnu, mannidamcherunna bharamellam

    I have long known about the whole burden that weighs on the earth,

    Inningu vanneedum ningalennullathum, ennullamthannilundorcchayennal.

    and I knew in my heart that you would come here today.

    Bhoobharamthannetthalarppathinnororo, vyaparam chenchemme cheyvathinnay

    To lighten the earth's burden and to carry out each task properly,

    Manushanayippirakkunnathundu njan, anakadundubhisoonuvayi,

    I will be born as a man, as the son of Vasudeva, called Anakadundubhi;

    मैं मनुष्य बनकर जन्म लूँगा, आनकदुंदुभि कहे जाने वाले वसुदेव का पुत्र बनकर;

    Mootthavanayippirannuninneedume, moortthivisheshamay chertthananthan

    Ananta, a special form of mine, will be born as my elder brother;

    अनंत शेषनाग मेरे ही विशेष रूप में मेरे बड़े भाई बनकर जन्म लेंगे;

    Vanavarellarumadaravodangu, yadavanmarayippirakka mannil

    all you gods, go gladly and be born on earth as Yadavas;

    आप सब देवता आदर के साथ धरती पर यादव बनकर जन्म लें;

    Mayayay mevunna deviyum vannangu, manushiyayippirakkum pinne

    and the Goddess who exists as Maya will also come and be born as a woman,

    Venunna karyangal sadhicchukolluvan, chenuttuninnu thunappathinnay

    to stand gracefully by my side and help accomplish what must be done;

    ताकि ज़रूरी काम पूरे करने में वे शोभा के साथ मेरा साथ दें;

    Parathe pinne njan paridam pooriccha, bharatthettheertthu thalartthu nannay

    then, without delay, I will remove the burden filling the earth and lighten it well.

    Medinithannude vedanapokkuvan, khedikkavendayinningalarum.

    None of you need grieve any more over how to end the Earth's pain.

    Vanavarellarumennathu kettappol, varijasambhavanthanumayi

    When the gods heard this, together with Brahma, the lotus-born,

    Medinithannude khedattheertthudan, melatthil poyangu vinnil pukkar.

    they eased the Earth's grief and went happily back to heaven.
