Durvasassuravanitaptadivyamalyam shakraya svayamupadaya tatra bhuyah, nagendrapratimridite shashapa shakram ka kshantistvaditaradevatamshajanam.

Durvasa gave Indra a divine garland he had received from a heavenly maiden; when Indra’s elephant trampled it, the sage cursed Indra. What patience can there be in those born of a portion of gods other than you?

Shapena prathitajaretha nirjarendre deveshvapyasurajiteshu nishprabheshu, sharvadyah kamalajametya sarvadeva nirvanaprabhava samam bhavantamapuh.

By that curse Indra, king of the immortals, grew old, and the gods, defeated by the demons, lost their splendour. Shiva and all the gods went to Brahma, and together they came to you, the source of liberation.

Brahmadyaih stutamahima chiram tadanim pradushshanvarada purah parena dhamna, he deva ditijakulairvidhaya sandhim piyusham parimathateti paryashastvam.

Long praised by Brahma and the others, you appeared before them in supreme radiance, giver of boons, and told them: ‘Gods, make a truce with the demons and churn the ocean for nectar.’

Sandhanam kritavati danavaih suraughe manthanam nayati madena mandaradrim, bhrashtesminbadaramivodvahankhagendre sadyastvam vinihitavan payahpayodhau.

When the gods had made peace with the demons and were proudly carrying Mount Mandara to be the churning rod, it slipped from them; at once you carried it on Garuda as if it were a berry and set it in the ocean of milk.

Adhaya drutamatha vasukim varatram pathodhau vinihitasarvabijajale, prarabdhe mathanavidhau surasuraistairvyajattvam bhujagamukhekaroh surarin.

Quickly they set Vasuki the serpent as the churning rope, cast all kinds of herbs into the ocean, and the gods and demons began to churn; by a clever trick you put the demons at the serpent’s head.

Kshubdhadrau kshubhitajalodare tadanim dugdhabdhau gurutarabharato nimagne, deveshu vyathitatameshu tatpriyaishi pranaishih kamathatanum kathoraprishtham.

Then, as the mountain shook and the waters churned, it sank into the ocean of milk under its great weight. The gods were in deep distress, and wishing them well, you took the form of a tortoise with a hard back.

Vajratisthiratarakarparena vishno vistaratparigatalakshayojanena, ambhodheh kuharagatena varshmana tvam nirmagnam kshitidharanathamunninetha.

O Vishnu, with a shell firmer than diamond, a hundred thousand yojanas wide, your body went into the depths of the ocean and lifted up the sunken king of mountains.

Unmagne jhatiti tada dharadharendre nirmethurdridhamiha sammadena sarve, avishya dvitayaganepi sarparaje vaivashyam parishamayannavivridhastan.

When the great mountain rose up at once, they all churned hard with joy; and entering both groups and the serpent king, you took away their exhaustion and gave them strength.

Uddamabhramanajavonnamadgirindranyastaikasthiratarahastapankajam tvam, abhrante vidhigirishadayah pramodadudbhranta nunuvurupattapushpavarshah.

Seeing you holding your lotus hand firmly on the mountain as it swayed with the wild speed of the churning, Brahma, Shiva and the others in the sky, beside themselves with joy, praised you with showers of flowers.

Daityaughe bhujagamukhanilena tapte tenaiva tridashakulepi kinchidarte, karunyattava kila deva varivahah pravarshannamaragananna daityasanghan.

The demons were scorched by the hot breath from the serpent’s mouths, and the gods too were somewhat troubled by it; but by your compassion, Lord, the clouds rained on the gods and not on the demons.

Udbhramyadbahutiminakrachakravale tatrabdhau chiramathitepi nirvikare, ekastvam karayugakrishtasarparajah samrajan pavanapuresha pahi rogat.

In that ocean, swirling with whales and crocodiles, which stayed unchanged though churned for so long, you alone shone, pulling the serpent king with both hands. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from illness.
