Pritya daityastava tanumahahprekshanatsarvathapi tvamaradhyannajita rachayannanjalim sanjagada, mattah kim te samabhilashitam viprasuno vada tvam vittam bhaktam bhavanamavanim vapi sarvam pradasye.

Delighted by the radiance of your form, the demon king Bali worshipped you in every way, O Unconquered, and with folded hands said: Son of a Brahmin, tell me what you wish from me: wealth, food, a house or land; I will give it all.

Tamakshinam baligiramupakarnya karunyapurnopyasyotsekam shamayitumana daityavamsham prashamsan, bhumim padatrayaparimitam prarthayamasitha tvam sarvam dehiti tu nigadite kasya hasyam na va syat.

Hearing Bali’s generous words, you, though full of compassion, wished to curb his pride; praising the demon’s lineage, you asked for land measured by three steps. Had the lord of all asked for everything, who would not have laughed?

Vishvesham mam tripadamiha kim yachase balishastvam sarvam bhumim vrinu kimamunetyalapattvam sa dripyan, yasmaddarpattripadaparipurtyakshamah kshepavadan bandham chasavagamadatadarhopi gadhopashantyai.

Proudly he said: Foolish boy, why ask me, lord of the world, for three steps? Choose the whole earth; what use is this? Because of that pride, unable to fulfil three steps, he suffered taunts and bondage, though he did not deserve them, so that he might find deep peace.

When he said, If three steps do not please you, the worlds will not satisfy you either, O giver of boons, and was about to pour the water to make the gift, Shukra, teacher of the demons, prompted by you who wished to test him, said plainly: Do not, do not give; this is Hari.

Yachatyevam yadi sa bhagavanpurnakamosmi soham dasyamyeva sthiramiti vadan kavyashaptopi daityah, vindhyavalya nijadayitaya dattapadyaya tubhyam chitram chitram sakalamapi sa prarpayattoyapurvam.

If the Lord himself asks like this, my every wish is fulfilled; I will surely give, said the demon, though Shukra cursed him; and after his wife Vindhyavali washed your feet, he gave you everything with the pouring of water. How wonderful!

Nissandeham ditikulapatau tvayyashesharpanam tadvyatanvane mumuchurrishayah samarah pushpavarsham, divyam rupam tava cha tadidam pashyatam vishvabhajamuchchairuchchairavridhadavadhikritya vishvandabhandam.

As the lord of Diti’s race made that total offering to you without doubt, the sages and gods showered flowers; and as all beings watched, your divine form grew higher and higher, until it reached the bounds of the cosmic egg.

Tvatpadagram nijapadagatam pundarikodbhavosau kunditoyairasichadapunadyajjalam vishvalokan, harshotkarshat subahu nanrite khecharairutsavesmin bherim nighnanbhuvanamacharajjambavan bhaktishali.

When the tip of your foot reached his realm, Brahma, born of the lotus, washed it with water from his pot, and that water purified all the worlds. In great joy the beings of the sky danced at this festival, and the devoted Jambavan went round the world beating a drum.

Tavaddaityastvanumatimrite bharturarabdhayuddha devopetairbhavadanucharaih sangata bhangamapan, kalatmayam vasati purato yadvashatpragjitah smah kim vo yuddhairiti baligira tetha patalamapuh.

Meanwhile the demons, starting a battle without their master’s consent, met your attendants and the gods and were routed. This is Time itself before us, by whose power we were once defeated; why fight? At Bali’s words they went down to Patala.

Pashairbaddham patagapatina daityamuchchairavadistarttiyikam disha mama padam kim na vishveshvarosi, padam murdhni pranaya bhagavannityakampam vadantam prahladastam svayamupagato manayannastavittvam.

When Garuda had bound the demon with nooses, you said aloud: Show me where to place my third step; are you not lord of the universe? Place your foot on my head, O Lord, he said, unshaken. Then Prahlada came himself, honoured him, and praised you.

Darpochchhittyai vihitamakhilam daitya siddhosi punyairlokastestu tridivavijayi vasavatvam cha pashchat, matsayujyam bhaja cha punarityanvagrihna balim tam vipraissantanitamakhavarah pahi vatalayesha.

All this was done to cut away your pride, O demon; your merit has made you perfect. May you have a realm finer than heaven, then become Indra, and later attain oneness with me. So you blessed Bali, and had the Brahmins complete his great sacrifice. O Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
