Vaivasvatakhyamanuputranabhagajatanabhaganamakanarendrasutombarishah, saptarnavavritamahidayitopi reme tvatsangishu tvayi cha magnamanassadaiva.

Ambarisha was the son of King Nabhaga, of the line of Vaivasvata Manu. Though he ruled the earth girded by seven seas, his joy was in the company of your devotees, his mind always immersed in you.

Tvatpritayesakalameva vitanvatosya bhaktyaiva deva nachiradabhrithah prasadam, yenasya yachanamritepyabhirakshanartham chakram bhavanpravitatara sahasradharam.

As he did everything to please you, Lord, his devotion soon won your grace; even without his asking, you gave him your thousand-edged discus to protect him.

Sa dvadashivratamatho bhavadarchanartham varsham dadhau madhuvane yamunopakanthe, patnya samam sumanasa mahatim vitanvan pujam dvijeshu visrijanpashushashtikotim.

Then, to worship you, he kept the Dvadashi vow for a year at Madhuvana by the Yamuna with his devout wife, holding grand worship and giving sixty crore cows to brahmins.

Tatratha paranadine bhavadarchanante durvasasasya munina bhavanam prapede, bhoktum vritashcha sa nripena parartishilo mandam jagama yamunam niyamanvidhasyan.

There, on the day of breaking the fast, after his worship of you, the sage Durvasa came to his house. Invited by the king to eat, the sage, who liked to test others, went slowly to the Yamuna to perform his rites.

Rajnatha paranamuhurtasamaptikhedadvaraiva paranamakari bhavatparena, prapto munistadatha divyadrisha vijanan kshipyan krudhoddhritajato vitatana krityam.

Then the king, devoted to you and anxious as the auspicious hour for breaking the fast was ending, broke it with water alone. The sage arrived, knew it by his divine sight, and in a rage tore out a lock of his matted hair and created a demon.

Krityam cha tamasidharam bhuvanam dahantimagrebhivikshya nripatirna padachchakampe, tvadbhaktabadhamabhivikshya sudarshanam te krityanalam shalabhayanmunimanvadhavit.

Seeing before him that sword-wielding demon scorching the world, the king did not move from his place. Seeing harm threatened to your devotee, your Sudarshana discus turned the demon’s fire into a moth’s flame and chased the sage.

Fleeing in fear through all the worlds and seeing your discus everywhere, he went to Brahma; turned away with “Who can escape the wheel of time?”, he went to Shiva, who too could only bow to you.

Bhuyo bhavannilayametya munim namantam proche bhavanahamrishe nanu bhaktadasah, jnanam tapashcha vinayanvitameva manyam yahyambarishapadameva bhajeti bhuman.

Then he came to your abode, and to the sage bowing before you, you said: “Sage, I am the servant of my devotees. Knowledge and austerity are worthy only when joined with humility. Go and take refuge at Ambarisha’s feet,” great Lord.

Tavatsametya munina sa grihitapado rajapasritya bhavadastramasavanaushit, chakre gate muniradadakhilashishosmai tvadbhaktimagasi kritepi kripam cha shamsan.

When the sage came and clasped his feet, the king stepped back and praised your weapon. When the discus withdrew, the sage gave him every blessing, praising his devotion to you and his kindness even to one who had wronged him.

Raja pratikshya munimekasamamanashvan sambhojya sadhu tamrishim visrijanprasannam, bhuktva svayam tvayi tatopi dridham ratobhut sayujyamapa cha sa mam pavanesha payah.

The king had waited a full year for the sage without eating. He fed the sage well, sent him away pleased, and only then ate himself. After that he grew even firmer in love for you and attained union with you. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
