Ekada dadhivimathakarinim mataram samupasedivan bhavan, stanyalolupataya nivarayannankametya papivanpayodharau.

One day you came to your mother as she churned curd. Eager for milk, you stopped her churning, climbed into her lap and drank at her breast.

Ardhapitakuchakudmale tvayi snigdhahasamadhurananambuje, dugdhamisha dahane parisrutam dhartumashu janani jagama te.

You had drunk only half, your lotus face sweet with a tender smile, when your mother hurried off, Lord, to save the milk boiling over on the fire.

Samipitarasabhangasangatakrodhabharaparibhutachetasa, manthadandamupagrihya patitam hanta deva dadhibhajanam tvaya.

Your mind full of anger at having your drink cut short, you took the churning stick and smashed the pot of curd, Lord!

Uchchaladdhvanitamuchchakaistada sannishamya janani samadruta, tvadyashovisaravaddadarsha sa sadya eva dadhi vistritam kshitau.

Hearing the loud crash, your mother came running and saw the curd spread across the floor, like your fame spreading far and wide.

Vedamargaparimargitam rusha tvamavikshya parimargayantyasau, sandadarsha sukritinyulukhale diyamananavanitamotave.

Not finding you, whom even the Vedas seek, she searched in anger, and found you on the blessed mortar, feeding butter to a cat.

Tvam pragrihya bata bhitibhavanabhasurananasarojamashu sa, rosharushitamukhi sakhipuro bandhanaya rashanamupadade.

She quickly seized you, your lotus face glowing with a show of fear, and, her own face flushed with anger, picked up a rope in front of her friends to tie you.

Bandhumichchhati yameva sajjanastam bhavantamayi bandhumichchhati, sa niyujya rashanagunanbahun dvyangulonamakhilam kilaikshata.

Wanting to bind you, whom good people long to have as their own, she tied many ropes together, yet found the whole always two fingers short.

Vismitotsmitasakhijanekshitam svinnasannavapusham nirikshya tam, nityamuktavapurapyaho hare bandhameva kripayanvamanyathah.

Seeing her sweating and worn out, watched by her amazed and smiling friends, you, Hari, though forever free, mercifully let yourself be bound.

Sthiyatam chiramulukhale khaletyagata bhavanameva sa yada, pragulukhalabilantare tada sarpirarpitamadannavasthithah.

“Stay on that mortar a long time, you rascal!” she said and went inside; then you sat there eating the butter you had hidden in the mortar’s hollow.

Yadyapashasugamo vibho bhavan samyatah kimu sapashayanaya, evamadi divijairabhishtuto vatanatha paripahi mam gadat.

“Lord, if you are easily reached by those free of bonds, how were you bound by one holding a rope?” Praised thus by the gods, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from illness.
