1. अन्यावतारनिकरेष्वनिरीक्षितं ते भूमातिरेकमभिवीक्ष्य तदाघमोक्षे।
   ब्रह्मा परीक्षितुमनाः स परोक्षभावं निन्येऽथ वत्सकगणान् प्रवितत्य मायाम्॥

   Anyavataranikareshvanirikshitam te bhumatirekamabhivikshya tadaghamokshe, brahma parikshitumanah sa parokshabhavam ninyetha vatsakaganan pravitatya mayam.

   Having seen at Agha’s liberation a greatness of yours never shown in your other incarnations, Brahma wanted to test you; spreading his illusion, he spirited the calves away.

   अघासुर की मुक्ति के समय आपकी वह महिमा देखकर, जो दूसरे अवतारों में नहीं दिखी थी, ब्रह्मा ने आपकी परीक्षा लेनी चाही और अपनी माया फैलाकर बछड़ों को छिपा दिया।

2. वत्सानवीक्ष्य विवशे पशुपोत्करे तानानेतुकाम इव धातृमतानुवर्ती।
   त्वं सामिभुक्तकबलो गतवांस्तदानीं भुक्तांस्तिरोऽधित सरोजभवः कुमारान्॥

   Vatsanavikshya vivashe pashupotkare tananetukama iva dhatrimatanuvarti, tvam samibhuktakabalo gatavamstadanim bhuktamstirodhita sarojabhavah kumaran.

   When the cowherd boys could not find the calves and grew upset, you went off with a half-eaten mouthful as if to fetch them, going along with Brahma’s plan; then the lotus-born hid the boys at their meal too.

   बछड़ों को न देखकर जब ग्वाल बाल बेचैन हुए, तो ब्रह्मा की इच्छा का साथ देते हुए आप आधा कौर हाथ में लिए उन्हें लाने के बहाने चले गए; तब कमल से जन्मे ब्रह्मा ने भोजन करते बालकों को भी छिपा दिया।

3. वत्सायितस्तदनु गोपगणायितस्त्वं शिक्यादिभाण्डमुरलीगवलादिरूपः।
   प्राग्वद्विहृत्य विपिनेषु चिराय सायं त्वं माययाऽथ बहुधा व्रजमाययाथ॥

   Vatsayitastadanu gopaganayitastvam shikyadibhandamuraligavaladirupah, pragvadvihritya vipineshu chiraya sayam tvam mayayatha bahudha vrajamayayatha.

   Then you became the calves and the cowherd boys, even their slings, pots, flutes and horns. You played in the woods as before for a long while, and in the evening, through your power, returned to Vraja in many forms.

   तब आप स्वयं बछड़े और ग्वाल बाल बन गए, और उनके छींके, बर्तन, बाँसुरी, सींग आदि भी। पहले की तरह देर तक वनों में खेलकर शाम को आप अपनी माया से अनेक रूपों में व्रज लौट आए।

4. त्वामेव शिक्यगवलादिमयं दधानो भूयस्त्वमेव पशुवत्सकबालरूपः।
   गोरूपिणीभिरपि गोपवधूमयीभिरासादितोऽसि जननीभिरतिप्रहर्षात्॥

   Tvameva shikyagavaladimayam dadhano bhuyastvameva pashuvatsakabalarupah, gorupinibhirapi gopavadhumayibhirasaditosi jananibhiratipraharshat.

   Yourself the slings and horns, yourself the calves and boys, you were welcomed with great joy by the mothers, both cows and gopis.

   आप ही छींके और सींग आदि बने थे, आप ही बछड़े और बालक; गायों और गोपियों के रूप वाली माताओं ने बड़े आनंद से आपका स्वागत किया।

5. जीवं हि कञ्चिदभिमानवशात् स्वकीयं मत्वा तनूज इति रागभरं वहन्त्यः।
   आत्मानमेव तु भवन्तमवाप्य सूनुं प्रीतिं ययुर्न कियतीं वनिताश्च गावः॥

   Jivam hi kanchidabhimanavashat svakiyam matva tanuja iti ragabharam vahantyah, atmanameva tu bhavantamavapya sunum pritim yayurna kiyatim vanitashcha gavah.

   They had loved some soul as their child out of a sense of “mine”; but now, having you, the Self of all, as their son, how boundless was the love of the women and the cows!

   वे पहले ममता के कारण किसी जीव को अपना बेटा मानकर प्रेम करती थीं; पर अब सबकी आत्मा आपको ही बेटे रूप में पाकर स्त्रियों और गायों को कितना अपार प्रेम हुआ!

6. एवं प्रतिक्षणविजृम्भितहर्षभारनिश्शेषगोपगणलालितभूरिमूर्तिम्।
   त्वामग्रजोऽपि बुबुधे किल वत्सरान्ते ब्रह्मात्मनोरपि महान् युवयोर्विशेषः॥

   Evam pratikshanavijrimbhitaharshabharanishsheshagopaganalalitabhurimurtim, tvamagrajopi bubudhe kila vatsarante brahmatmanorapi mahan yuvayorvisheshah.

   Even your elder brother realised only at the year’s end that these many forms, cherished by all the cowherds in ever-growing joy, were you. So great is the difference even between the two of you.

   हर पल बढ़ते आनंद से सारे ग्वालों द्वारा दुलारे गए आपके इन अनेक रूपों को आपके बड़े भाई भी साल के अंत में ही पहचान पाए। आप दोनों में भी इतना बड़ा अंतर है।

7. वर्षावधौ नवपुरातनवत्सपालान् दृष्ट्वा विवेकमसृणे द्रुहिणे विमूढे।
   प्रादीदृशः प्रतिनवान् मकुटाङ्गदादिभूषांश्चतुर्भुजयुजः सजलाम्बुदाभान्॥

   Varshavadhau navapuratanavatsapalan drishtva vivekamasrine druhine vimudhe, pradidrishah pratinavan makutangadadibhushamshchaturbhujayujah sajalambudabhan.

   At the end of the year Brahma saw both the new and the old calves and boys and was baffled, unable to tell them apart. Then you showed him every one of them four-armed, wearing crowns and armlets, dark as rain clouds.

   साल पूरा होने पर नए और पुराने बछड़ों और ग्वालों को देखकर ब्रह्मा भ्रम में पड़ गए और भेद न कर सके। तब आपने उन सबको मुकुट, बाजूबंद आदि से सजे, चार भुजाओं वाले, जल भरे बादल जैसे साँवले रूप में दिखाया।

8. प्रत्येकमेव कमलापरिलालिताङ्गान् भोगीन्द्रभोगशयनान् नयनाभिरामान्।
   लीलानिमीलितदृशः सनकादियोगिव्यासेवितान् कमलभूर्भवतो ददर्श॥

   Pratyekameva kamalaparilalitangan bhogindrabhogashayanan nayanabhiraman, lilanimilitadrishah sanakadiyogivyasevitan kamalabhurbhavato dadarsha.

   Brahma saw each one as you: their limbs caressed by Lakshmi, resting on the serpent king, a joy to the eyes, eyes playfully half-closed, served by Sanaka and other yogis.

   ब्रह्मा ने हर एक को आपके रूप में देखा: लक्ष्मी से सेवित अंगों वाले, शेषनाग पर लेटे, आँखों को सुख देने वाले, लीला से आँखें मूँदे, और सनक आदि योगियों से सेवित।

9. नारायणाकृतिमसङ्ख्यतमां निरीक्ष्य सर्वत्र सेवकमपि स्वमवेक्ष्य धाता।
   मायानिमग्नहृदयो विमुमोह यावदेको बभूविथ तदा कबलार्धपाणिः॥

   Narayanakritimasankhyatamam nirikshya sarvatra sevakamapi svamavekshya dhata, mayanimagnahridayo vimumoha yavadeko babhuvitha tada kabalardhapanih.

   Seeing countless forms of Narayana, and himself everywhere as their servant, the creator was overwhelmed, his heart sunk in illusion; then you became one again, a half-eaten mouthful in your hand.

   नारायण के अनगिनत रूप देखकर और हर जगह स्वयं को सेवक रूप में देखकर ब्रह्मा माया में डूबकर मोहित हो गए; तभी आप फिर से एक हो गए, हाथ में आधा कौर लिए।

10. नश्यन् मदे तदनु विश्वपतिं मुहुस्त्वां नत्वा च नूतवति धातरि धाम याते।
    पोतैः समं प्रमुदितैः प्रविशन् निकेतं वातालयाधिप विभो परिपाहि रोगात्॥

    Nashyan made tadanu vishvapatim muhustvam natva cha nutavati dhatari dhama yate, potaih samam pramuditaih pravishan niketam vatalayadhipa vibho paripahi rogat.

    His pride gone, Brahma bowed to you, lord of the universe, again and again, praised you, and went to his abode. Returning home with the happy boys, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from illness.

    तब घमंड नष्ट होने पर ब्रह्मा ने विश्वपति आपको बार-बार प्रणाम किया, स्तुति की और अपने धाम चले गए। प्रसन्न बालकों के साथ घर लौटने वाले हे गुरुवायुर के स्वामी, रोग से मेरी रक्षा कीजिए।
