Kuchelanama bhavatah satirthyatam gatah sa sandipanimandire dvijah, tvadekaragena dhanadinihspriho dinani ninye prashami grihashrami.
The Brahmin named Kuchela, who had been your fellow student at Sandipani’s school, loving you alone and caring nothing for wealth, spent his days as a calm, contented householder.

Samanashilapi tadiyavallabha tathaiva no chittajayam sameyushi, kadachiduche bata vrittilabdhaye ramapatih kim na sakha nishevyate.
His wife, though of a similar nature, had not mastered her mind as he had. One day she said, “Alas, to earn a living, why not go to your friend, the lord of Lakshmi?”
Itiritoyam priyaya kshudhartaya jugupsamanopi dhane madavahe, tada tvadalokanakautukadyayau vahanpatante prithukanupayanam.
Urged this way by his hungry wife, though he disliked wealth because it breeds pride, he set out, eager just to see you, carrying a gift of flattened rice tied in the corner of his cloth.

Gatoyamashcharyamayim bhavatpurim griheshu shaibyabhavanam sameyivan, pravishya vaikunthamivapa nirvritim tavatisambhavanaya tu kim punah.
He reached your wondrous city and, among its mansions, came to the palace of your queen. Entering it, he felt the bliss of reaching Vaikuntha; and what then of the great welcome you gave him!
Prapujitam tam priyaya cha vijitam kare grihitvakathayah pura kritam, yadindhanartham gurudarachoditairapartuvarsham tadamarshi kanane.
When he had been worshipped and fanned by your beloved, you took his hand and recalled old times: how, sent by your teacher’s wife to fetch firewood, you both endured an unseasonal downpour in the forest.

Trapajushosmatprithukam baladatha pragrihya mushtau sakridashite tvaya, kritam kritam nanviyateti sambhramadrama kilopetya karam rurodha te.
Then you snatched the flattened rice from him as he hesitated in embarrassment, and ate a handful; and Lakshmi, they say, rushed up and held your hand: “Enough, enough, this much is plenty!”

Bhakteshu bhaktena sa manitastvaya purim vasannekanisham mahasukham, bataparedyurdravinam vina yayau vichitrarupastava khalvanugrahah.
Honoured by you as a devotee among devotees, he spent one night in the city in great happiness. Alas, the next day he left without any wealth; truly, your grace takes wondrous forms.

Yadi hyayachishyamadasyadachyuto vadami bharyam kimiti vrajannasau, tvaduktililasmitamagnadhih punah kramadapashyanmanidipramalayam.
“Had I asked, Achyuta would have given. What shall I tell my wife?” he thought as he walked; but his mind sank again into your words, your playfulness and smiles, and in time he saw his home shining with gems.
Kim margavibhramsha iti bhramankshanam griham pravishtah sa dadarsha vallabham, sakhiparitam manihemabhushitam bubodha cha tvatkarunam mahadbhutam.
“Have I lost my way?” he wondered for a moment. Entering the house, he saw his wife surrounded by companions and adorned with gems and gold, and he understood your truly wondrous compassion.

Though he lived in jewelled halls, his devotion kept rising, and he attained immortality. You who fulfil your devotees’ wishes like this, Lord of Guruvayur, take away my illnesses.
