Agre pashyami tejo nibidatarakalayavalilobhaniyam piyushaplavitoham tadanu tadudare divyakaishoravesham, tarunyarambharamyam paramasukharasasvadaromanchitangairavitam naradadyairvilasadupanishatsundarimandalaishcha.

Before me I see a radiance lovelier than a dense cluster of blue kalaya flowers. Flooded with nectar, I then see within it a divine youthful form, charming with the dawn of youth, surrounded by Narada and others, thrilling with the taste of supreme bliss, and by the shining circle of the Upanishads as lovely maidens.

Nilabham kunchitagram ghanamamalataram samyatam charubhangya ratnottamsabhiramam valayitamudayachchandrakaih pinchhajalaih, mandarasrannivitam tava prithukabaribharamalokayeham snigdhashvetordhvapundramapi cha sulalitam phalabalenduvithim.

I behold your rich mass of hair: dark and glossy, curled at the tips, thick and spotless, gracefully tied, lovely with a jewelled ornament, ringed with gleaming peacock feathers and wreathed with mandara flowers; and your lovely forehead like a young crescent moon, with its shining white upright mark.

Hridyam purnanukamparnavamridulaharichanchalabhruvilasairanilasnigdhapakshmavaliparilasitam netrayugmam vibho te, sandrachchhayam vishalarunakamaladalakaramamugdhataram karunyalokalilashishiritabhuvanam kshipyatam mayyanathe.

O Lord, your lovely eyes, with brows playing like gentle waves on an ocean of full compassion, fringed with dark soft lashes, deep and shaded, shaped like wide red lotus petals, with charming pupils, cooling the world with their playful glance of mercy: let them fall on me, who has no other protector.

    Uttungollasinasam harimanimukuraprollasadgandapalivyalolatkarnapashanchitamakaramanikundaladvandvadipram, unmiladdantapanktisphuradarunatarachchhayabimbadharantahpritiprasyandimandasmitamadhurataram vaktramudbhasatam me.

May your face shine before me: its fine, high nose, cheeks gleaming like sapphire mirrors, bright with a pair of jewelled makara earrings swinging from your ears, and sweetest with a gentle smile that flows with love from lips red as bimba fruit, lit by the glimpse of your teeth.

Bahudvandvena ratnojjvalavalayabhrita shonapanipravalenopattam venunalim prasritanakhamayukhangulisangasharam, kritva vaktraravinde sumadhuravikasadragamudbhavyamanaih shabdabrahmamritaistvam shishiritabhuvanaissincha me karnavithim.

With your two arms wearing gleaming jewelled bracelets, and hands red as coral, you hold the flute, dappled by the light of your fingernails. Raise it to your lotus mouth and drench my ears with the nectar of sacred sound, sweet unfolding melodies that cool the whole world.

Utsarpatkaustubhashritatibhirarunitam komalam kanthadesham vakshah shrivatsaramyam taralatarasamuddipraharapratanam, nanavarnaprasunavalikisalayinim vanyamalam vilolallolambam lambamanamurasi tava tatha bhavaye ratnamalam.

I meditate on your soft throat, reddened by the spreading glow of the Kaustubha gem; your chest, lovely with the Shrivatsa mark and strands of shimmering necklaces; the forest garland of many-coloured flowers and leaves hanging on your chest with bees hovering round it; and your jewelled necklace.

Ange panchangaragairatishayavikasatsaurabhakrishtalokam linanekatrilokivitatimapi krisham bibhratam madhyavallim, shakrashmanyastataptojjvalakanakanibham pitachelam dadhanam dhyayamo diptarashmisphutamanirashanakinkinimanditam tvam.

We meditate on you: your body anointed with five fragrant pastes whose rich scent draws the world; your slender waist that holds countless universes; your yellow silk shining like molten gold set on sapphire; adorned with a jewelled girdle of little bells that flash with light.

Uru charu tavoru ghanamasrinaruchau chittachorau ramaya vishvakshobham vishankya dhruvamanishamubhau pitachelavritangau, anamranam purastannyasanadhritasamastarthapalisamudgachchhayam janudvayam cha kramaprithulamanojne cha janghe nisheve.

I adore your lovely thighs, firm and smooth, which steal Lakshmi’s heart and are always covered in yellow silk, surely for fear of stirring the world; your knees, like caskets holding every blessing for those who bow before you; and your gracefully tapering shins.

I contemplate your anklets, whose sweet chime seems to say that worshipping your feet is the highest good; the front of your feet, like the tortoise that lifts the mountain of devotees’ minds sinking in delusion; and the blessed row of your toes, whose raised coppery nails shine like moons, driving away the darkness of suffering for all who take refuge.

Yogindranam tvadangeshvadhikasumadhuram muktibhajam nivaso bhaktanam kamavarshadyutarukisalayam natha te padamulam, nityam chittasthitam me pavanapurapate krishna karunyasindho hritva nihsheshatapanpradishatu paramanandasandohalakshmim.

O Lord, the soles of your feet, sweetest of all your limbs to the great yogis, the home of the liberated, the tender shoot of the wish-granting tree for devotees: may they stay ever in my heart. O Lord of Guruvayur, Krishna, ocean of compassion, take away all my pain and grant me the wealth of supreme bliss.

O Lord of the universe, forgive whatever I have said here without knowing your greatness, and may this hymn of more than a thousand verses win your grace. This Narayaniyam, Narayana’s in two ways, for it praises Narayana and was born of one named Narayana, rich with your playful incarnations, may it bring long life, health and happiness.
