Thai oru thingalum tharai vilakkith, than mandalam ittu maasi munnaal, aiya nun manal kondu theru anindhu, azhaginukku alangariththu Ananga dhevaa, uyyavum aamkolo endru solli, unnaiyum umbiyaiyum thozhudhen, veyyadhu or thazhal umizh chakkarak kai, Vengadavarku ennai vidhikkitriye.

All through the month of Thai I swept the ground and drew cool mandalas; in the first days of Masi I laid fine sand on the street and decorated it beautifully. Bodiless Kama, asking, ‘Can I be saved?’, I worshipped you and your younger brother. Will you destine me for the Lord of Venkatam, whose hand holds the discus that spits fierce flame?

Vellai nun manalkondu theru anindhu, velvaraippadhan munnam thurai padindhu, mullum illaach chulli eri maduththu, muyandru unnai norkindren Kaamadhevaa, kal avizh poonganai thoduththukkondu, Kadalvannan enbadhu or per ezhudhi, pullinai vaai pilandhaan enbadhu or, ilakkinir puga ennai eikitriye.

I laid fine white sand on the street, bathed at the river before dawn, fed the fire with thornless twigs, and I strive to keep this vow for you, Kama. Fit your honey-dripping flower arrows, write on them the name ‘the Ocean-coloured One’, and shoot me so that I reach my mark: him who tore open the bird-demon’s beak.

Maththa nan narumalar murukka malar, kondu muppodhum un adi vanangith, thaththuvam ili endru nenju erindhu, vaasagaththu azhiththu unnai vaidhidaame, koththu alar poonganai thoduththukkondu, Govindhan enbadhu or per ezhudhi, viththagan Vengada vaanan ennum, vilakkinir puga ennai vidhikkitriye.

With fragrant datura and murukka blossoms I bow at your feet three times a day. So that my heart does not burn and I do not curse you as faithless, fit your arrows of clustered flowers, write on them the name ‘Govinda’, and destine me to enter the light that is the wise Lord who dwells at Venkatam.

Suvaril puraana nin per ezhudhich, churava nar kodikkalum thurangangalum, kavarip pinaakkalum karuppu villum, kaattith thandhen kandaai Kaamadhevaa, avaraip piraayam thodangi endrum, aadhariththu ezhundha en thada mulaigal, Thuvaraip piraanukke sangarpiththuth, thozhudhu vaiththen ollai vidhikkitriye.

Ancient one, I wrote your name on the wall and painted your fish banners, your horses, your fan-bearing maidens and your sugarcane bow for you to see, Kama. My breasts, which have grown with this longing since I was a tiny girl, I have vowed to the Lord of Dwaraka alone and offered in worship: destine me to him quickly.

Vaanidai vaazhum av vaanavarkku, maraiyavar velviyil vaguththa avi, kaanidaith thirivadhu or nari pugundhu, kadappadhum moppadhum seivadhu oppa, oonidai aazhi sangu uththamarkku endru, unniththu ezhundha en thada mulaigal, maanidavarkku endru pechchup padil, vaazhagillen kandaai Manmadhane.

It would be like a jackal from the forest creeping in to sniff and trample the offering the priests set aside for the gods who live in the sky: if there is even talk of giving my body, which grew meant for the noble Lord who bears the discus and conch, to some mortal man, I will not live, Manmatha.

Uruvu udaiyaar ilaiyaargal nallaar, oththu vallaargalaik kondu vaigal, theruvidai edhirkondu panguni naal, thirundhave norkindren Kaamadhevaa, karuvudai mugil vannan kaayaavannan, karuvilai pol vannan kamala vannath, thiru udai mugaththinir thiruk kangalaal, thirundhave nokku enakku arulu kandaai.

With handsome, good young men skilled in the Vedas, I welcome you in the street at dawn in Panguni and keep this vow properly, Kama. Bless me so that he, dark as a rain-heavy cloud, like the kaya and karuvilai blossoms, looks on me truly with the holy eyes of his lotus-lovely face.

Kaai udai nellodu karumbu amaiththu, katti arisi aval amaiththu, vaai udai maraiyavar mandhiraththaal, Manmadhane unnai vananggugindren, theyam mun alandhavan Thirivikkiraman, thirukkaigalaal ennaith theendum vannam, saai udai vayirum en thada mulaiyum, dharaniyil thalaippugazh tharakkitriye.

Setting out paddy in the ear, sugarcane, jaggery, rice and flattened rice, I worship you, Manmatha, with the mantras of eloquent priests. Give my slender body the highest fame on earth: let Trivikrama, who once measured the world, touch me with his holy hands.

Maasu udai udambodu thalai ulari, vaaippuram veluththu orupodhum undu, thesu udaith thiral udaik Kaamadhevaa, norkindra nonbinaik kurikkol kandaai, pesuvadhu ondru undu ingu emperumaan, penmaiyaith thalai udaiththu aakkum vannam, Kesava Nambiyaik kaal pidippaal, ennum ip peru enakku arulu kandaai.

With body unwashed, hair dry and loose, lips gone pale, eating only once a day, I keep this vow: radiant, mighty Kama, take note of it. There is one thing to say: so that my womanhood is fulfilled, grant me this blessing, that people say of me, ‘She massages the feet of Keshava.’

Thozhudhu muppodhum un adi vanangith, thoomalar thooith thozhudhu eththugindren, pazhudhu indrip paarkadal vannanukke, panisaidhu vaazhap peraavidil naan, azhudhu azhudhu alamandhu ammaa vazhanga, aatravum adhu unakku uraikkum kandaai, uzhuvadhor eruththinai nugangodu paaindhu, oottam indrith thurandhaal okkume.

Three times a day I bow at your feet, strew fresh flowers and praise you. If I am not allowed to live serving only the Lord coloured like the ocean of milk, and I weep and weep in distress crying ‘Mother!’, the blame will surely fall on you: it would be like yoking a plough ox and then driving it off without feeding it.

Karuppu vil malark kanaik Kaamavelaik, kazhalinai panindhu angu or kari alara, maruppinai osiththup pul vaai pilandha, Manivannarku ennai vaguththidu endru, poruppu anna maadam polindhu thondrum, Pudhuvaiyar kon Vittuchiththan Kodhai, viruppu udai inthamizh maalai vallaar, vinnavar kon adi nannuvare.

Kodai, daughter of Vishnuchitta, chief of Puduvai with its mansions shining like mountains, bowed at the feet of Kama of the sugarcane bow and flower arrows and asked to be destined for the gem-coloured Lord who broke the tusk of the trumpeting elephant and split the bird-demon’s beak. Those who can recite this loving garland of sweet Tamil will reach the feet of the king of the gods.
