Thirumalai

Matrondrum vendaa maname madhilarangar, katrinam meyththa kazhalinaikkeezh utra, thirumaalai paadum seerth thondaradippodi em, perumaanai eppozhudhum pesu.
O mind, want nothing else. Always speak of our lord Thondaradippodi, the glorious devotee who sang the Thirumalai and lives beneath the feet of the Lord of walled Srirangam, who herded the calves.

Kaavalil pulanai vaiththuk kalidhannaik kadakkap paaindhu, naavalittu uzhitharugindrom naman thamar thalaigal meedhe, moovulagu undu umizhndha mudhalva nin naamam katra, aavalippu udaimai kandaai arangamaa nagarulaane.
We have put the senses under guard, leapt clear of the dark age, and now roam boldly over the very heads of Yama’s servants. O First Lord, who swallowed and brought forth the three worlds, see, this is the pride of having learned your name, O Lord of great Srirangam!
Pachchaimaa malaipol meni pavalavaai kamalach chengan, achchudhaa amarar ere aayardham kozhundhe ennum, ichchuvai thavira yaan poi indhira logam aalum, achchuvai perinum venden arangamaa nagarulaane.
A body like a great green mountain, coral lips, red lotus eyes: ‘O Achyuta, lord of the immortals, darling of the cowherds!’ Giving up this sweetness, even if I could have the sweetness of ruling Indra’s heaven, I would not want it, O Lord of great Srirangam!
Vedha nool piraayam nooru manisar thaam puguvarelum, paadhiyum urangip pogum nindradhil padhinaiyaandu, pedhai paalagan adhaagum pini pasi mooppuththunbam, aadhalaal piravi venden arangamaa nagarulaane.
Even if people live the hundred years the scriptures allow, half goes in sleep; of the rest, fifteen years go in foolish childhood, and what remains in disease, hunger, old age and sorrow. So I do not want birth, O Lord of great Srirangam!
Moyththa valvinaiyul nindru moondrezhuththu udaiya peraal, kaththirabandhum andre paraangadhi kandukondaan, iththanai adiyar aanaarkku irangum nam aranganaaya, piththanaip petrum andho piraviyul pinangumaare.
Even Kshatrabandhu, sunk in heavy sin, reached the highest state that very day through your three-syllable name. Alas, though people have our Ranga, who is madly kind to all who become his devotees, they still struggle in the cycle of birth!
Pendiraal sugangal uyppaan periyadhor idumbai poondu, undiraak kidakkumpodhu udalukke karaindhu naindhu, thanduzhaai maalai maarban thamargalaaip paadiyaadi, thondu poondu amudham unnaath thozhumbar soru ugakkumaare.
To enjoy pleasures with women they take on great trouble, lie awake at night and waste away for the body’s sake. These slaves will not become devotees of the Lord with the cool tulasi garland, sing and dance, serve him and taste nectar; how they love mere food!
Maram suvar madhil eduththu marumaikke verumai poondu, puram suvar ottai maadam puralumpodhu ariya maatteer, aram suvaraagi nindra aranganaarkku aatcheyyaadhe, puram suvar kolam seydhu pul kavvak kidakkindreere.
You build walls of sin and leave yourselves empty for the next life; you won’t understand until this leaky house with its outer walls collapses. Without serving Ranga, who stands as the wall of righteousness, you decorate the outer wall and lie there for the birds to peck.

Would people who have truly mastered the scriptures look at or listen to the Buddhist and Jain teachings, which stand as low doctrines? Even if my head is cut off, I will not die without saying it: truly, sirs, the god who destroyed Lanka with his bow is the only God.

If Jains, shaven ascetics and luckless Buddhists speak unbearable things about you out of hatred, it is best to walk away, for it is like a disease; and if I had the chance and the power, I would think it right to cut off their heads on the spot, O Lord of great Srirangam.

Is there any other god, you thoughtless people? Until trouble strikes, you will not realise that he is the One. You know nothing of the end. There is no God but him: bow to the feet of our father who herded the calves.
Naattinaan deivam engum nalladhor arul thannaale, kaattinaan thiruvarangam uybavarkku uyyum vannam, ketteere nambimeergaal geruda vaahananum nirkach, chettai than madiyagaththuch chelvam paarththirukkindreere.
In his kindness he set up gods everywhere, and showed Srirangam as the way for those who would be saved. Listen, good people: while the Lord who rides Garuda stands right here, you sit looking for wealth in the lap of Misfortune!

With one bow he bridged the swelling sea and, to save the worlds, killed the demon king in battle: our hero dwells in the great temple of walled Srirangam. You who were luckless from the womb, you waste your time without ever saying ‘Srirangam’!
Namanum murkalanum pesa naragil nindraargal ketka, naragame suvarkkamaagum naamangal udaiya nambi, avanadhu oor arangam ennaadhu ayarththu veezhndhu aliya maandhar, kavalaiyul padugindraar endru adhanukke kavalgindrene.
When Yama and the sage Mudgala spoke his names and those in hell heard them, hell itself became heaven: such are the Lord’s names. I grieve only that pitiable people forget to say ‘Srirangam, his town’, fall away, and suffer in sorrow.

If all beings on this great earth, girdled by the wild-waved sea, praised the king of the gods who wears fragrant tulasi, and if even the ignorant called out ‘Srirangam’, all the hells meant for those who live by the senses would be overgrown with grass and vanish.

Groves where bees hum, groves where peacocks dance, groves the clouds touch, groves where koels call, groves where the king of the gods dwells: beautiful Srirangam! Take the food from the brutes who gulp it down without saying this, and give it to the dogs.

The king with the Garuda flag is true to the true, and false to the false, like luckless me. Srirangam is the town of the beautiful Lord who appears, ending all doubt, to those whose understanding leads to salvation, once they know he is the One.

When I was a gambler and a thief, keeping company with rogues, sinking in the net of women’s fish-like eyes, he said ‘Come here’, entered my mind, and made my love for him grow. Srirangam is the town of that beautiful Lord.

I would not stand and praise him lovingly; I am luckless and have no sense. Yet my heart, hard as iron, melts little by little, and my two eyes rejoice at the sight of the sweet sugarcane who has made his home in the great temple of Srirangam, ringed by groves where bees hum.

On the cool sea where sweet waves toss their spray, our lotus-eyed Lord lies alone and reigns. My eyes, having seen Kannan with lips red as ripe fruit, shed tears like dewdrops. What shall I do, sinner that I am?

With his head to the west, his feet stretched to the east, his back to the north and his gaze toward Lanka in the south, our sea-coloured God, our father, sleeps on the serpent bed. Seeing this, my whole body melts. What shall I do, O people of the world?

In Srirangam, where the river flows, the wondrous Lord reclines on the serpent bed. Can his devotees ever turn away from his holy, fine chest, his emerald form and shoulders, his pure lotus eyes, his coral-red lips, his glorious crown and his radiance?

O troublesome heart, unable to live in bold devotion with a humble mind fixed on coral-lipped Ranga, tell me: can anyone even imagine how the jewel-like Lord, so close to us, lies in that temple, like a rare mountain of red gold?

We can only repeat what has been said; his greatness cannot be grasped. He cannot be known except by the faultless. Other than bowing to him who dwells in pure minds, can we say anything at all? Tell me, foolish heart.

In Srirangam of flowering groves, in the middle of the Kaveri, holier than the Ganga, whose rising waters spread and flow, I have seen our Mal, our Lord and God, lying there. How could I forget it and live, poor wretch that I am?

Though you have seen how the stealer of hearts lies in Srirangam of wide groves, where floodwaters spread, and seen his fine lotus face, O heart, you are hard indeed: you won’t realise he is the One, but love deceit and waste your life in it.

I have lost the priestly duty of bathing and tending the three sacred fires; it is not in me, and I am not even your devotee. With what shall I rejoice, O Lord, O sea-coloured one? I cry out to you: have mercy and bless me, O Lord of great Srirangam.

When the monkeys pushed mountains into the sea, the guileless squirrel bathed, rolled in the sand and ran to help dam the waves; I am not like it. My heart is hard as wood, I am a deceiver, and because of that heart I fail to serve Ranga; pitiable, I grow weary.
