துஞ்சலும் துஞ்சலி லாத போழ்தினும், நெஞ்சகம் நைந்து நினைமின் நாள்தொறும், வஞ்சக மற்றடி வாழ்த்த வந்தகூற், றஞ்சவு தைத்தன அஞ்செ ழுத்துமே.
Thunjalum thunjalilaadha pozhdhinum, nenjagam naindhu ninaimin naal thorum, vanjagam atradi vaazhththa vandha koo, tranjavu udhaiththana anjezhuththume.
Asleep or awake, think of them every day with a melting heart: it was the five sacred syllables that kicked Death and made him tremble when he came for the boy who praised the Lord’s feet without guile.
सोते हुए या जागते हुए, हर दिन पिघले मन से उनका स्मरण करो: पंचाक्षर ने ही मृत्यु को लात मारकर डराया, जब वह भोलेपन से प्रभु के चरणों की स्तुति करने वाले बालक को लेने आई।

Mandhira naanmarai aagi vaanavar, sindhaiyul nindravar thammai aalvana, sendhazhal ombiya semmai vedhiyark, kandhiyul mandhiram anjezhuththume.
The five syllables are the mantra and the four Vedas; they rule the gods who keep them in their hearts; and for the upright Vedic priests who tend the sacred fire, they are the mantra of the evening rites.
पंचाक्षर ही मंत्र हैं और चारों वेद भी; वे उन देवताओं पर राज करते हैं जो उन्हें मन में रखते हैं; और पवित्र अग्नि की सेवा करने वाले सच्चे वैदिक ब्राह्मणों के लिए वे संध्या पूजा के मंत्र हैं।

जो शरीर के भीतर श्वास को शांत करते हैं, ज्ञान का उज्ज्वल दीप जलाते हैं और भीतर के शहद रूपी प्रभु की स्तुति का मार्ग खोलते हैं, उनके सारे संकट पंचाक्षर मिटा देते हैं।

Nallavar theeyar enaadhu nachchinar, sellal kedach Siva muththi kaattuva, kolla Namandramar kondu pomidath, thallal keduppana anjezhuththume.
Good or wicked, whoever longs for them, the five syllables end their sorrow and show them liberation in Shiva; and when Yama’s men come to kill and carry them off, the five syllables end that torment.
अच्छा हो या बुरा, जो भी पंचाक्षर की चाह रखता है, उसका दुख मिटता है और उसे शिव में मुक्ति का मार्ग दिखता है; और जब यम के दूत मारकर ले जाने आते हैं, तब भी पंचाक्षर वह कष्ट मिटा देते हैं।

Like the five fragrant flower arrows of mighty Kama, the five elements within us, the five groves, the five hoods of the cobra and the five fingers of one’s own hand, so are the five syllables.

When sneezing and coughing will not stop, when the heat of hell rises, when the karma of this life comes crushing down, the five syllables are a truer companion than even a mother.
जब छींक और खाँसी रुकने का नाम न लें, जब नरक की तपन उठे, जब इस जीवन के कर्म कुचलते हुए आएँ, तब पंचाक्षर माँ से भी बढ़कर साथी हैं।

For those who cherish them, the five syllables cut the round of birth and grant liberation, destroy affliction, and give wealth day after day; they delight in the Lord’s eternal great dance.
जो पंचाक्षर को प्रिय मानते हैं, उनके लिए ये जन्म का चक्र काटकर मुक्ति देते हैं, कष्ट मिटाते हैं, और दिन-प्रतिदिन धन देते हैं; ये प्रभु के शाश्वत महान नृत्य में आनंदित होते हैं।

The five syllables were cherished by the young goddess whose hair draws the bees; by singing them Ravana of old was saved; and to devotees who take them up in praise, they grant the whole universe.

For the devotees, mad with love, who babble every day in praise of the lovely red feet that cloud-dark Vishnu and four-faced Brahma could not find, the five syllables become their heart’s delight.
जो प्रेम में पागल भक्त हर दिन उन सुंदर लाल चरणों की महिमा बड़बड़ाते रहते हैं जिन्हें बादल-वर्ण विष्णु और चतुर्मुख ब्रह्मा भी न खोज सके, उनके लिए पंचाक्षर ही मन का आनंद बन जाते हैं।

Those whose minds reject the falsehoods of the Buddhists and Jains understood the five syllables clearly and trusted them; for those who wear the wise holy ash, they become a weapon against karma, the enemy.
