Vaadinen vaadi varundhinen manaththaal, perundhuyar idumbaiyil pirandhu, koodinen koodi ilaiyavar thammodu, avar tharum kalaviye karudhi, odinen odi uyvadhor porulaal, unarvu ennum perumpadham thirindhu, naadinen naadi naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

I withered, and withering I suffered in my mind, born into great sorrow and trouble; I mixed with young women, thinking only of the pleasure they give; I ran and ran. Then, through the one thing that saves, I turned to the great state called awareness, and seeking, I found the name ‘Narayana’.

Aaviye amudhe ena ninaindhu urugi, avar avar panai mulai thunaiyaap, paaviyen unaraadhu eththanai pagalum, pazhudhupoi ozhindhana naalgal, thoovi ser annam thunaiyodum punarum, soozh punal kudandhaiye thozhudhu en, naavinaal uyya naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

Thinking of women as ‘my life, my nectar’, melting, taking them as my support, I, a sinner, never understood, and so many days were wasted and gone. Now, worshipping at Kudandai, ringed by water, where feathered swans unite with their mates, I have found, so that my tongue may save me, the name ‘Narayana’.

Semame vendith theevinai perukkith, therivaimaar uruvame maruvi, oomanaar kanda kanavilum pazhudhaai, ozhindhana kazhindha an naalgal, kaamanaar thaadhai nammudai adigal, tham adaindhaar manaththu iruppaar, naamam naan uyya naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

Seeking only my own comfort, I piled up evil deeds and clung to women’s forms; those past days were wasted, more uselessly than a dream seen by a mute. To be saved, I have found the name of our Lord, father of Kama, who dwells in the hearts of those who come to him: the name ‘Narayana’.

Vendriye vendi veezhporutku irangi, velkanaar kalaviye karudhi, nindravaa nillaa nenjinai udaiyen, en seygen nedu visumbu anavum, pandriyaai andru paaragam keenda, paazhiyaan aazhiyaan arule, nandru naan uyya naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

Wanting only victory, grieving over wealth that slips away, thinking only of union with spear-eyed women, I have a heart that will not stay where it should. What can I do? By the grace of the mighty Lord of the discus, who that day became a boar reaching up to the high sky and dug up the earth, I have found, to be truly saved, the name ‘Narayana’.

Kalvanen aanen padiru seydhiruppen, kandavaa thiridhandhenelum, thelliyen aanen sel kadhikku amaindhen, sikkenath thiruvarul petren, ul elaam urugik kural thazhuththu ozhindhen, udambu elaam kanna neer sora, nal irul alavum pagalum naan azhaippan, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

I became a thief, lived by deceit and roamed wherever I pleased; yet now I have become clear, ready for the way ahead, and have firmly received holy grace. All within me melts, my voice falters, tears stream over my whole body; through the deep night and through the day I call the name ‘Narayana’.

Embiraan endhai ennudaich chutram, enakku arasu ennudai vaazhnaal, ambinaal arakkar verukkola nerukki, avar uyir seguththa em annal, vambulaam solai maamadhil thanjai, maamanik koyile vanangi, nambigaal uyya naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

He is my Lord, my father, my kin, my king, my whole lifetime; our great one, who pressed the demons with his arrows until they were terrified and took their lives. Bowing at the great jewel temple of Thanjai, with its fragrant groves and mighty walls, I have found, good people, the way to be saved: the name ‘Narayana’.

Il pirappu ariyeer ivar avar enneer, innadhor thanmai endru unareer, karpagam pulavar kalaigan endru ulagil, kandavaa thondaraip paadum, sol porul aaleer sollugen vammin, soozh punal kudandhaiye thozhumin, nal porul kaanmin paadi neer uymin, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

You don’t know your own origin, can’t tell who is who, don’t understand the true nature of things; you poets who spend words and meaning praising ordinary men as if they were the wish-giving tree and the refuge of poets: come, I will tell you. Worship at Kudandai, ringed by water; see the true treasure; sing it and be saved: the name ‘Narayana’.

Katrilen kalaigal aimpulan karudhum, karuththule thiruththinen manaththai, petrilen adhanaal pedhaiyen nanmai, peru nilaththu aar uyirkku ellaam, setrame vendith thiridharuven thavirndhen, sel kadhikku uyyum aaru enni, nal thunaiyaagap patrinen adiyen, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

I did not learn the arts; I trained my mind only in what the five senses want, and so, foolish, I gained no good. I used to roam seeking only harm to every being on the great earth; I have stopped. Thinking of how to be saved for the way ahead, I, your servant, have held fast, as my good companion, to the name ‘Narayana’.

Kulam tharum selvam thandhidum adiyaar, padu thuyar aayina ellaam, nilam tharam seyyum neel visumbu arulum, arulodu peru nilam alikkum, valam tharum matrum thandhidum petra, thaayinum aayina seyyum, nalam tharum sollai naan kandukonden, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

It gives a good family and wealth; it levels all the sorrows devotees suffer to the ground; it grants the high heaven, and with grace the great earth too; it gives strength and everything else; it does more good than the mother who bore us. I have found the word that gives all good: the name ‘Narayana’.

Manju ulaam solai vandu arai maaneer, mangaiyaar vaal kalikandri, senjolaal eduththa deiva nal maalai, ivai kondu sikkena thondeer, thunjumpodhu azhaimin thuyar varil ninaimin, thuyar ileer sollilum nandraam, nanju thaan kandeer nammudai vinaikku, naaraayanaa ennum naamam.

Devotees, hold firmly to this fine divine garland, made in pure words by Kalikandri, the sword-bearing king of Mangai, land of cloud-touching groves, humming bees and wide waters. Call on it when you are dying; think of it when trouble comes; even if you have no trouble, saying it is good. See: the name ‘Narayana’ is poison to our karma.
