1. வெள்ளைத் தாமரைப் பூவில் இருப்பாள், வீணை செய்யும் ஒலியில் இருப்பாள், கொள்ளை இன்பம் குலவு கவிதை, கூறு பாவலர் உள்ளத்து இருப்பாள், உள்ளதாம் பொருள் தேடி உணர்ந்தே, ஓதும் வேதத்தின் உள்நின்று ஒளிர்வாள், கள்ளமற்ற முனிவர்கள் கூறும், கருணை வாசகத்து உட்பொருள் ஆவாள்.

   Vellaith thaamaraip poovil iruppaal, Veenai seiyum oliyil iruppaal, Kollai inbam kulavu kavidhai, Kooru paavalar ullatthu iruppaal, Ulladhaam porul thedi unarndhe, Odhum vedhatthin ulnindru olirvaal, Kallamatra munivargal koorum, Karunai vaasagatthu utporul aavaal.

   She sits on the white lotus; she lives in the sound of the veena; she dwells in the hearts of poets whose verse is full of boundless joy; she shines within the Vedas, chanted by those who seek and know the truth; she is the inner meaning of the compassionate words of guileless sages.

   वह श्वेत कमल पर विराजती हैं; वीणा की ध्वनि में बसती हैं; असीम आनंद से भरी कविता कहने वाले कवियों के हृदय में रहती हैं; सत्य को खोजकर जानने वालों द्वारा गाए जाने वाले वेदों के भीतर चमकती हैं; और निष्कपट मुनियों के करुणामय वचनों का भीतरी अर्थ हैं।

2. மாதர் தீங்குரற் பாட்டில் இருப்பாள், மக்கள் பேசும் மழலையில் உள்ளாள், கீதம் பாடும் குயிலின் குரலைக், கிளியின் நாவை இருப்பிடங் கொண்டாள், கோதகன்ற தொழிலுடைத்தாகிக், குலவு சித்திரம் கோபுரம் கோயில், ஈதனைத்தின் எழிலிடை உற்றாள், இன்பமே வடிவாகிடப் பெற்றாள்.

   Maadhar theenkural paattil iruppaal, Makkal pesum mazhalaiyil ullaal, Geetham paadum kuyilin kuralaik, Kiliyin naavai iruppidam kondaal, Kodhagandra thozhiludaitthaagik, Kulavu chitthiram gopuram koyil, Eedhanaitthin ezhilidai utraal, Inbame vadivaagidap petraal.

   She is in the sweet-voiced songs of women and in the babble of little children; she has made her home in the voice of the singing koel and the tongue of the parrot; she lives in the beauty of flawless crafts, lovely paintings, temple towers and temples; she has taken joy itself as her form.

   वह स्त्रियों के मधुर गीतों में हैं और बच्चों की तुतलाती बोली में; उन्होंने गाती कोयल की आवाज़ और तोते की जीभ को अपना घर बना लिया है; वह निर्दोष शिल्पों, सुंदर चित्रों, गोपुरों और मंदिरों की सुंदरता में बसती हैं; आनंद ही उनका रूप बन गया है।

3. வஞ்சமற்ற தொழில் புரிந்து உண்டு, வாழும் மாந்தர் குலதெய்வம் ஆவாள், வெஞ்சமர்க்கு உயிராகிய கொல்லர், வித்தை ஓர்ந்திடு சிற்பியர் தச்சர், மிஞ்ச நற்பொருள் வாணிகஞ் செய்வோர், வீர மன்னர் பின் வேதியர் யாரும், தஞ்சமென்று வணங்கிடுந் தெய்வம், தரணி மீது அறிவாகிய தெய்வம்.

   Vanjamatra thozhil purindhu undu, Vaazhum maandhar kuladheivam aavaal, Venjamarkku uyiraagiya kollar, Vitthai orndhidu sirpiyar thachchar, Minja narporul vaanigam seivor, Veera mannar pin vedhiyar yaarum, Thanjamendru vanangidum dheivam, Tharani meedhu arivaagiya dheivam.

   She is the family goddess of those who live and eat by honest work. Blacksmiths, the life of fierce battles, sculptors and carpenters skilled in their craft, traders in good wares, brave kings and Vedic scholars: all bow to her as their refuge. She is the goddess who is knowledge on this earth.

   वह उन लोगों की कुलदेवी हैं जो ईमानदारी से काम करके खाते और जीते हैं। भयंकर युद्धों के प्राण लोहार, कला में निपुण शिल्पी और बढ़ई, अच्छी वस्तुओं का व्यापार करने वाले, वीर राजा और वेदज्ञ: सब उन्हें अपनी शरण मानकर प्रणाम करते हैं। वह धरती पर ज्ञान रूपी देवी हैं।

4. தெய்வம் யாவும் உணர்ந்திடுந் தெய்வம், தீமை காட்டி விலக்கிடுந் தெய்வம், உய்வமென்ற கருத்துடையோர்கள், உயிரினுக்கு உயிராகிய தெய்வம், செய்வமென்றொரு செய்கை எடுப்போர், செம்மை நாடிப் பணிந்திடு தெய்வம், கைவருந்தி உழைப்பவர் தெய்வம், கவிஞர் தெய்வம் கடவுளர் தெய்வம்.

   Dheivam yaavum unarndhidum dheivam, Theemai kaatti vilakkidum dheivam, Uivamendra karutthudaiyorgal, Uyirinukku uyiraagiya dheivam, Seivamendroru seigai edupor, Semmai naadip panindhidu dheivam, Kaivarundhi uzhaippavar dheivam, Kavignar dheivam kadavular dheivam.

   She is the goddess who knows all gods, the goddess who shows us evil and turns us from it, the life of the life of those who mean to rise. Those who set out on a task bow to her, seeking to do it well. She is the goddess of those who toil with their hands, the goddess of poets, the goddess of the gods.

   वह सब देवताओं को जानने वाली देवी हैं, बुराई दिखाकर उससे दूर रखने वाली देवी, और जो उद्धार चाहते हैं उनके प्राणों के प्राण। जो कोई काम शुरू करते हैं, वे उसे अच्छे से करने के लिए उन्हें नमन करते हैं। वह हाथों से मेहनत करने वालों की देवी, कवियों की देवी और देवताओं की देवी हैं।

5. செந்தமிழ் மணி நாட்டிடை உள்ளீர், சேர்ந்து இத்தேவை வணங்குவம் வாரீர், வந்தனம் இவட்கே செய்வதென்றால், வாழி அஃதிங்கு எளிதன்று கண்டீர், மந்திரத்தை முணுமுணுத்து ஏட்டை, வரிசையாக அடுக்கி அதன்மேல், சந்தனத்தை மலரை இடுவோர், சாத்திரம் இவள் பூசனை அன்றாம்.

   Sendhamizh mani naattidai ulleer, Serndhu itthevai vananguvam vaareer, Vandhanam ivatke seivadhendraal, Vaazhi ahdhingu elidhandru kandeer, Mandhiratthai munumunutthu ettai, Varisaiyaaga adukki adhanmel, Sandhanatthai malarai iduvor, Saatthiram ival poosanai andraam.

   You who live in this jewel of a land of fine Tamil, come, let us worship this goddess together. But know that truly honouring her is not easy. Muttering mantras, stacking books in rows and putting sandal paste and flowers on them: that ritual is not her real worship.

   हे सुंदर तमिल के इस रत्न-देश के निवासियो, आओ, मिलकर इस देवी की पूजा करें। पर जान लो कि उनका सच्चा सम्मान करना आसान नहीं। मंत्र बुदबुदाना, किताबें कतार में सजाकर उन पर चंदन और फूल चढ़ाना: यह रस्म उनकी सच्ची पूजा नहीं है।

6. வீடுதோறும் கலையின் விளக்கம், வீதிதோறும் இரண்டொரு பள்ளி, நாடு முற்றிலும் உள்ளன ஊர்கள், நகர்கள் எங்கும் பலபல பள்ளி, தேடு கல்வி இலாததொர் ஊரைத், தீயினுக்கு இரையாக மடுத்தல், கேடு தீர்க்கும் அமுதமென் அன்னை, கேண்மை கொள்ள வழியிவை கண்டீர்.

   Veedudhorum kalaiyin vilakkam, Veedhidhorum irandoru palli, Naadu mutrilum ullana oorgal, Nagargal engum palapala palli, Thedu kalvi ilaadhador ooraith, Theeyinukku iraiyaaga madutthal, Kedu theerkkum amudhamen annai, Kenmai kolla vazhi ivai kandeer.

   The lamp of learning in every home, a school or two on every street, many schools in every village and town across the land; and a village without learning should be handed to the fire. These are the ways to win the friendship of my mother, the nectar that ends all ruin.

   हर घर में विद्या का दीपक, हर गली में एक-दो पाठशालाएँ, देश भर के गाँवों और नगरों में अनेक विद्यालय; और जिस गाँव में विद्या न हो, उसे आग के हवाले कर देना चाहिए। हर विनाश मिटाने वाली अमृत-स्वरूप मेरी माँ की मैत्री पाने के यही मार्ग हैं।

7. ஊணர் தேசம் யவனர்தந் தேசம், உதய ஞாயிற்று ஒளிபெறு நாடு, சேணகன்றதோர் சிற்றடிச் சீனம், செல்வப் பாரசிகப் பழந் தேசம், தோணலத்த துருக்கம் மிசிரம், சூழ்கடற்கு அப்புறத்தினில் இன்னும், காணும் பற்பல நாட்டிடை எல்லாம், கல்வித் தேவின் ஒளிமிகுந்து ஓங்க.

   Oonar dhesam yavanar thandhesam, Udhaya gnaayitru oliperu naadu, Senagandradhor chitradich cheenam, Selvap paarasigap pazhan dhesam, Thonalattha thurukkam misiram, Soozhkadarku appuratthinil innum, Kaanum parpala naattidai ellaam, Kalvith dhevin olimigundhu onga.

   The land of the Huns, the land of the Greeks, the land that receives the light of the rising sun, far-off China, the ancient wealthy land of Persia, Turkey, Egypt, and the many lands beyond the surrounding seas: in all of them the light of the goddess of learning shines bright and grows.

   हूणों का देश, यवनों का देश, उगते सूर्य का प्रकाश पाने वाला देश, दूर का चीन, प्राचीन समृद्ध फ़ारस, तुर्की, मिस्र, और चारों ओर के समुद्रों के पार के अनेक देश: इन सबमें विद्या की देवी का प्रकाश तेज़ी से चमकता और बढ़ता है।

8. ஞானம் என்பதோர் சொல்லின் பொருளாம், நல்ல பாரத நாட்டிடை வந்தீர், ஊனம் இன்று பெரிதிழைக்கின்றீர், ஓங்கு கல்வி உழைப்பை மறந்தீர், மானமற்று விலங்குகள் ஒப்ப, மண்ணில் வாழ்வதை வாழ்வெனலாமோ, போனதற்கு வருந்துதல் வேண்டா, புன்மை தீர்ப்ப முயலுவம் வாரீர்.

   Gnaanam enbadhor sollin porulaam, Nalla Bhaaratha naattidai vandheer, Oonam indru peridhizhaikkindreer, Ongu kalvi uzhaippai marandheer, Maanamatru vilangugal oppa, Mannil vaazhvadhai vaazhvenalaamo, Ponadharku varundhudhal vendaa, Punmai theerppa muyaluvam vaareer.

   You were born in the good land of Bharat, the very meaning of the word wisdom; yet today you do yourselves great harm, having forgotten the labour of lofty learning. Can living on earth like animals, without self-respect, be called living? Don't grieve over what is gone; come, let us strive to end this shame.

   तुम उस अच्छे भारत देश में जन्मे, जो 'ज्ञान' शब्द का ही अर्थ है; फिर भी आज तुम अपनी बड़ी हानि कर रहे हो, ऊँची विद्या के परिश्रम को भूलकर। क्या आत्मसम्मान के बिना पशुओं की तरह धरती पर जीना जीवन कहा जा सकता है? बीते पर शोक मत करो; आओ, इस हीनता को मिटाने का प्रयास करें।

9. இன்னறுங்கனிச் சோலைகள் செய்தல், இனிய நீர்த்தண் சுனைகள் இயற்றல், அன்ன சத்திரம் ஆயிரம் வைத்தல், ஆலயம் பதினாயிரம் நாட்டல், பின்னருள்ள தருமங்கள் யாவும், பெயர் விளங்கி ஒளிர நிறுத்தல், அன்ன யாவினும் புண்ணியம் கோடி, ஆங்கோர் ஏழைக்கு எழுத்தறிவித்தல்.

   Innarungkanich cholaigal seidhal, Iniya neerth thanj chunaigal iyatral, Anna satthiram aayiram vaitthal, Aalayam padhinaayiram naattal, Pinnarulla dharumangal yaavum, Peyar vilangi olira nirutthal, Anna yaavinum punniyam kodi, Aangor ezhaikku ezhuttharivitthal.

   Planting groves of sweet, fragrant fruit, making cool ponds of sweet water, setting up a thousand free kitchens, building ten thousand temples, and doing every other charity that makes one's name shine: far greater than all of these, ten million times the merit, is teaching one poor person to read and write.

   मीठे, सुगंधित फलों के बाग लगाना, मीठे पानी के शीतल तालाब बनाना, हज़ार अन्नक्षेत्र खोलना, दस हज़ार मंदिर बनवाना, और नाम चमकाने वाले बाकी सब दान करना: इन सबसे करोड़ गुना बड़ा पुण्य है किसी एक गरीब को अक्षर-ज्ञान देना।

10. நிதி மிகுந்தவர் பொற்குவை தாரீர், நிதி குறைந்தவர் காசுகள் தாரீர், அதுவுமற்றவர் வாய்ச்சொல் அருளீர், ஆண்மையாளர் உழைப்பினை நல்கீர், மதுரத் தேமொழி மாதர்கள் எல்லாம், வாணி பூசைக்கு உரியன பேசீர், எதுவும் நல்கி இங்கு எவ்வகையானும், இப்பெருந்தொழில் நாட்டுவம் வாரீர்.

    Nidhi migundhavar porkuvai thaareer, Nidhi kuraindhavar kaasugal thaareer, Adhuvumatravar vaaichchol aruleer, Aanmaiyaalar uzhaippinai nalgeer, Madhurath thenmozhi maadhargal ellaam, Vaani poosaikku uriyana peseer, Edhuvum nalgi ingu evvagaiyaanum, Ipperundhozhil naattuvam vaareer.

    You who are rich, give heaps of gold; you who have less, give coins; you who have nothing, give a kind word; you who are strong, give your labour; and all you women with honey-sweet speech, speak words fit for the worship of Vani. Give whatever you can, in whatever way: come, let us build this great work here.

    जो धनी हैं, सोने के ढेर दें; जिनके पास कम है, सिक्के दें; जिनके पास कुछ नहीं, अच्छे वचन दें; जो बलवान हैं, अपना श्रम दें; और मधुर वाणी वाली सब स्त्रियाँ वाणी की पूजा योग्य बातें कहें। जो भी हो सके, जैसे भी हो सके, देकर आओ, यहाँ इस महान कार्य को खड़ा करें।
